Day 1: Dallas to El Paso, Texas
The adventure began before sunrise in Dallas. With the car packed and a playlist ready, I headed west on Interstate 20 toward the vast landscapes of West Texas.
The drive felt like a journey through multiple versions of Texas. The skyscrapers of Dallas slowly gave way to rolling ranchlands, oil fields, and endless open skies. Stops in Midland and Odessa provided opportunities to stretch, grab some Texas barbecue, and experience the rugged energy of the Permian Basin.
As the sun began setting, the Franklin Mountains appeared on the horizon. Arriving in El Paso felt like reaching a different world altogether, where Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico converge. After checking into the hotel, I enjoyed authentic Mexican food and watched city lights sparkle beneath the mountains.
Drive Time: Approximately 9 hours
Day 2: Exploring El Paso
I dedicated the day to discovering one of Texas’ most underrated cities.
The morning started at Franklin Mountains State Park, where hiking trails revealed breathtaking views of the city and surrounding desert. The contrast between the urban skyline and rugged mountain terrain was unforgettable.
Afterward, I explored the historic Mission Trail, visiting centuries-old Spanish missions that tell the story of the region’s deep cultural heritage.
Lunch featured some of the best tacos I’ve ever tasted before spending the afternoon wandering through Downtown El Paso and the beautiful San Jacinto Plaza.
As evening arrived, I crossed viewpoints overlooking Ciudad Juárez and watched the desert sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and pink.
Day 3: El Paso to Chandler, Arizona
The drive west continued through New Mexico and Arizona.
Crossing desert landscapes that seemed to stretch forever, I was constantly amazed by how varied the Southwest could be. Rugged mountains, giant cactus fields, and dramatic rock formations appeared throughout the journey.
A stop in Tucson provided an ideal lunch break before continuing north to Chandler, a growing suburb southeast of Phoenix.
The warm Arizona evening was perfect for enjoying the downtown area, filled with restaurants, breweries, and public art.
Drive Time: Approximately 6 hours
Day 4: Discovering Chandler
Today was all about slowing down.
I began at the Desert Botanical Garden in nearby Phoenix, where towering saguaros demonstrated the resilience of life in the desert.
Next came a visit to Downtown Chandler, where local cafes and boutiques gave the city a charming personality.
The afternoon included exploring local parks and enjoying Arizona’s famous sunshine. As evening approached, I dined outdoors and watched the desert sky transform into a spectacular display of stars.
Day 5: Chandler to Flagstaff
Leaving the Valley of the Sun behind, I headed north.
The landscape transformation was remarkable. Desert scenery gradually gave way to higher elevations and cooler temperatures.
A stop in Sedona offered postcard-worthy red rock views. Towering sandstone formations surrounded the town, creating one of the most beautiful landscapes in America.
By late afternoon, I arrived in Flagstaff, nestled among ponderosa pine forests. After several days of desert heat, the mountain air felt incredibly refreshing.
Drive Time: Approximately 3 hours plus sightseeing stops
Day 6: Grand Canyon and Drive to Nevada
This was one of the most anticipated days of the trip.
An early departure from Flagstaff brought me to the Grand Canyon National Park. No photograph truly prepares you for your first glimpse of the canyon. The immense scale, layered colors, and dramatic cliffs were simply overwhelming.
I spent several hours walking along the South Rim, taking photos, and absorbing the incredible views.
In the afternoon, I began the drive toward Nevada. Crossing wide-open landscapes as the sun set added to the sense of adventure.
By evening, the bright lights of Las Vegas appeared in the distance like a mirage in the desert.
Day 7: Las Vegas and Hollywood
The morning started on the famous Las Vegas Strip.
I explored iconic resorts, watched dancing fountains at Bellagio, and soaked in the larger-than-life atmosphere that makes Las Vegas unique.
After lunch, I hit the road again and headed toward California.
Crossing the Mojave Desert, I eventually reached Hollywood. Seeing the Hollywood Sign and the city skyline marked another major milestone on the journey.
That evening, I walked along Hollywood Boulevard, taking in the energy of Los Angeles.
Drive Time: Approximately 4 hours
Day 8: Exploring Los Angeles
A full day in Los Angeles meant there was plenty to see.
The morning began at Griffith Observatory, offering panoramic views of the city and the Hollywood Sign.
Next came visits to Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive before heading to Santa Monica Pier to experience the Pacific Ocean.
Standing on the beach after driving across deserts and mountains felt incredibly rewarding.
As the sun set over the Pacific, I realized just how far the journey had already taken me.
Day 9: Los Angeles to San Francisco
California’s famous Highway 101 carried me north toward San Francisco.
Rolling hills, vineyards, coastal scenery, and charming towns made this one of the most enjoyable drives of the trip.
Approaching San Francisco, I caught my first glimpse of the city’s steep streets, historic architecture, and waterfront views.
By evening, I was walking along Fisherman’s Wharf and enjoying fresh seafood while looking across the bay.
Drive Time: Approximately 6-7 hours
Day 10: Golden Gate Bridge
Today was dedicated to one of America’s most iconic landmarks.
Early morning fog drifted around the towering orange-red towers of the Golden Gate Bridge, creating a magical atmosphere.
I walked across part of the bridge, enjoying incredible views of Alcatraz Island, downtown San Francisco, and the Pacific Ocean.
The remainder of the day included visits to:
- Fisherman’s Wharf
- Pier 39
- Lombard Street
- Chinatown
- Palace of Fine Arts
The combination of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery made San Francisco one of the highlights of the trip.
Day 11: Yosemite National Park
A day trip to Yosemite was the perfect finale.
Massive granite cliffs, waterfalls, giant sequoias, and pristine wilderness showcased some of the finest natural beauty in America.
Standing in Yosemite Valley, surrounded by El Capitan and Half Dome, I felt humbled by nature’s scale.
The park’s beauty provided a peaceful contrast to the cities visited earlier in the trip.
By evening, I returned to the San Francisco area for one final night.
Day 12: Fly Back to Dallas
The final morning arrived too quickly.
After breakfast overlooking San Francisco Bay, I headed to the airport and reflected on the incredible experiences of the previous twelve days.
The journey had covered:
- Texas deserts
- New Mexico landscapes
- Arizona mountains
- The Grand Canyon
- Nevada’s bright lights
- Hollywood glamour
